Health Sciences Research Building
|
Construction is underway on the new Emory and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Pediatric Research
Center on the site of Emory's old Turman residence hall complex, next to Druid Hills High School. Plans
call for the building to be approximately 196,000 gross sq. ft., with 115,000 gross sq. ft. dedicated
to pediatric research, and the remainder focused on other research in the WHSC, including cancer,
immunology, drug discovery, and other areas to be determined.
The joint research initiative between Emory University
and CHOA is based on the strategic plan of
Children's to be one of the elite children's hospitals in the country, which requires a strong research
base. This will be driven through the Children's announced research strategic plan and vision,
the Woodruff Health Sciences Center strategic plans in research, a new Pediatric Center and the
Department of Pediatrics in Emory University's School of Medicine.
Other programs for the building include expansion of cancer research, new drug discovery and
immunology. The architects now will begin to conduct program reviews, and then will proceed to the
design phase. Current plans include possible groundbreaking within a year, pending additional Board
review and approvals.
A two-level bridge, with offices and "dry" research space, will connect the new research building to
the current Emory-Children's Center and will serve as a new gateway to campus from the southeast.
This working bridge will be named in memory of George W. Brumley, MD, who served as head of the
Department of Pediatrics at Emory University and as Medical Director at Children's at Egleston from
1981 to 1995. The new research facility is expected to be open in April 2013.
