DNAThe international biotechnology spotlight will shine on Atlanta May 18-21 when the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) holds its annual meeting at the Georgia World Congress Center. The 2009 BIO International Convention, with the theme of Heal, Fuel, Feed the World, is expected to draw nearly 20,000 biotech industry managers, international public officials, governors, chief policy makers and trade representatives from 70 countries and nearly all 50 states.

As one of Georgia's premier academic research universities, Emory is joining with BIO's sponsors, Georgia BIO and the Georgia Department of Economic Development, along with the Georgia Research Alliance, to show the world the enormous impact of the state's research and biotechnology enterprises.

Emory's Office of Technology Transfer will have a prominent presence in the Georgia pavilion in the BIO exhibit hall, along with Yerkes National Primate Research Center. Emory's tech transfer staff and Emory biotech researchers will spend the week making connections and forging potential collaborations with research and industry partners from throughout the U.S. and the world. Emory research also will be featured in sessions on vaccine delivery technologies, nanotechnology, and global health.

BIOEmory start-up company GeoVax will also be part of the Georgia pavilion. GeoVax licensed from Emory the HIV/AIDS vaccine developed by Dr. Harriet Robinson, who was director of microbiology and immunology at Yerkes and a scientist at the Emory Vaccine Center before becoming senior vice president of research and development for GeoVax. The vaccine she developed is currently being tested in Phase II clinical trials. Robinson will host a BIO breakout session on vaccine development and technology.

Emory is working with the Georgia Department of Economic Development to help promote Georgia biotechnology through media outreach to the hundreds of reporters reporting on BIO, panel discussions at BIO, media announcements at the convention, and individual meetings between attendees. For example, Emory chemist and HIV/AIDS drug inventor Dennis Liotta and the Health Minister of South Africa will meet to discuss the collaboration on drug discovery training between the Emory Global Health Institute, the Emory Center for AIDS Research, South Africa, and Europe.

Emory research labs will host visiting delegations from India, Japan and China. The delegations will tour facilities at the Winship Cancer Institute, the Emory Chemical/Biology Discovery Center, and the Emory Center for Systems Imaging.

The Biotechnology Industry Organization is the preeminent trade association promoting innovation within the biotechnology industry, representing biotech companies, academic institutions, and state biotechnology centers in the U.S. and around the world.
