Emory’s alternative transportation programs are showing signs of healthy growth. The University’s Parking and Transportation Office reports a decrease of 1,312 parking permits issued in March 2007, compared to those issued at the start of the fall semester. This decrease of approximately 20 percent follows closely on the heels of an increase in parking rates on campus, as well as a period of expansion of Emory-sponsored transportation programs such as an expanded Park-n-Ride shuttle system, transit passes, Flexcar, carpools and vanpools.

The University’s three-person carpool program grew sharply from 36 participants last fall to 270 in March. And as an incentive, holders of three-person carpool permits have free, designated, convenient parking spaces on campus.

Emory’s free transit-pass program provides easy access to MARTA and various commuter bus networks run by Clayton, Cobb and Gwinnett counties as well as by the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA). This program had 941 participants in March, up by 129 since September.

What about the Cliff park-n-ride service? Emory’s three Cliff shuttle stops at North DeKalb, Northlake and South DeKalb malls are averaging 475 riders daily, after operating for less than one year.
