Sustainability article: Emory Farmers Market Special Events
July 17, 2009
Beginning in May, the Emory Farmers Market has hosted some delicious special events aimed at spotlighting and celebrating local, seasonal, and sustainable produce. On May 19th, the "Berry Bash" drew a crowd of over 200 people who lined up on the Cox Hall bridge to enjoy fresh strawberry shortcake prepared by Emory Dining's pastry chefs. The organic berries came from Miles Berry Farm in Baxley, Georgia, and the cases of fresh berries flew off the table as market customers purchased fresh-picked berries to take home.
On June 16th the market hosted a celebration of one of the state's most valued agricultural products, Vidalia Onions. Emory alumna, and farmer, Relinda Walker, of Walker Organic Farms in Sylvania, Georgia came to the market with her fabulous produce that day. Market customers enjoyed a rare treat of fried organic onion rings, prepared to order by Emory Dining chefs, served with a variety of dipping sauces.
On July 14th, market customers enjoyed a Sweet Corn Roast, served with herb-flavored butters. Farmer Chad Heard, from Newton, Georgia provided the organic sweet corn for the event. Market customers enjoyed ears dipped in the butter as they shopped for delicious, summer produce to take home.
On August 25th, the market will host cookbook author and local celebrity chef, Virginia Willis, author of "Bon Appetit, Y’all" demonstrating her black-eye pea and tomato salad at the market from 2 to 3pm. The Emory Dining venues will feature a tomato centric menu that day, with several tomato dishes from Ms. Willis' cookbook. Come and celebrate the tomato, undeniably one of the favorite flavors of summer!!
