Bike Emory article: Bike Emory: Why Not?
June 4, 2008
Source: Community Partnership Update/September 2007
The initial phase of Bike Emory, the University’s new campaign to encourage its faculty, students, staff and nearby neighbors to pedal instead of drive, recently shifted into high gear. The campaign asks the question “Why Not?” to promote cycling at Emory.
Partnering with Fuji Bikes, an international cycling company, and Bicycle South, a local retail outlet located at Clairmont and North Decatur roads, the Bike Emory campaign includes an interactive new website (bike.emory.edu) that:
•promotes cycling safety;
•provides useful information to cyclists that includes promotional items;
•includes a “cyclopedia” blog, an online forum for cycling enthusiasts to share tips and ideas with other riders;
•provides the dates, times and locations for the Mobile Repair Center; and
•links to other bike groups in the area.
Bicycle South has recently opened a Mobile Repair Center at two locations on Emory’s campus. Minor repairs will be made on-site and other repairs will be made at the Bicycle South shop and the repaired bicycle will be returned on the next visit to the Mobile Repair Center (usually within a few days). Arrangements can also be made to pick up repaired bikes at Bicycle South.
In addition to the Mobile Repair Center, Bike Emory will also offer a bike loaner program that allows Emory faculty, staff and students to reserve a bike for use around campus. The loaner program will be available to commuters who are unable to bike to campus but need alternative transportation for short trips, to run errands or to attend on-campus meetings.
To make it even easier, Emory is installing covered bicycle racks next to all newly constructed buildings on campus and already includes shower facilities in these buildings. By going the extra mile, Emory includes bike lanes on road improvement projects on its campus and supports the inclusion of bicycle lanes on all county roads within the Clifton community.
In order to generate enthusiasm and support, Bike Emory will raffle up to 50 new Fuji bikes to its faculty, staff and students. The raffle is intended to target those commuters and students most likely to use their new bike to cycle to work or school.
