Earlier this year Emory encouraged its faculty, staff, students and nearby neighbors to travel on two wheels by promoting its newly created Bike Emory campaign. The tag line asks “Why Not?” to encourage cycling at Emory and in the nearby community.

To date the Bike Emory campaign has flourished by:
• Launching an interactive website (bike.emory.edu) that provides useful information to cyclists and promotes cycling safety;
• Placing over 60 new bicycles onto the streets in the Clifton community through discounted promotions on the Bike Emory website;
• Gathering a critical mass of 57 bicyclists for Emory’s annual Bike to Campus Day in held October;
• Providing a Mobile Repair Center at two locations on Emory’s campus where minor repairs can be made on-site. Other repairs will be made at the Bicycle South store and brought back to the Mobile Repair Center for customer pick-up;
• Establishing a loaner program for commuters who are unable to bike to campus but need alternative transportation for short trips, to run errands or to attend on-campus meetings;
• Offering three bicycling safety classes to help bicyclists gain confidence while riding; and
• Raffling six Fuji bikes to target those commuters and students most likely to use their new bike to cycle to work or school.

Emory will continue to encourage the adaptation of short distance travel through the Bike Emory campaign. The coming year promises even more exciting events and incentives to ditch your automobile and hop on a bicycle, so stay tuned for more.

The Bike Emory initiative is a collaboration with Fuji Bikes, an international cycling manufacturer, and Bicycle South, a local retail outlet located at the Clairmont and North Decatur roads.
