Park-n-Ride: 100+ Cars Removed from Local Roads
June 5, 2008
Source: Community Partnership Update/October 2006
The first Cliff Park-n-Ride lot at North DeKalb Mall began providing a safe place for commuters to park their vehicles in June. During its first weeks in operation, the lot drew approximately 30 cars. By the last week of Sept. (three months later and four weeks into the academic school year), usage at the North DeKalb Park-n-Ride lot had quadrupled, providing a secure location to park and helping to remove approximately 120 vehicles from Clifton community roads.
"What a difference we are seeing in a few short weeks!" said Laura Ray, associate vice president for transportation and parking for Emory University. "This is exactly the type of response we hoped for. We expected that once the academic school year began, turnout at the Park-n-Ride lot would quickly increase. The more commuters realize the time and money they can save by taking Cliff shuttle buses to and from Park-n-Ride lots, the more I think we'll see these lots nearing capacity," Ray added.
The Park-n-Ride at North DeKalb Mall can be found at the northeast corner of the mall parking lot, near Macy's. Shuttle service is provided from 5:30 a.m. until 7:20 p.m.
A second Park-n-Ride lot will open in Oct. at Northlake Mall. Emory hopes to replicate the success of the first lot at this location, a convenient option for commuters driving in from metro Atlanta's northeastern suburbs.
