Energy Conservation Pays Off
May 29, 2008
Source: Community Partnership Update/June 2008
In March, Emory held its first all-building energy competition. Collectively, Emory’s building occupants saved 144,000 kWhs of electricity when comparing March ’07 and ’08 data. That’s roughly enough power to run Goizueta Business School for one month. Turning off lights and unplugging electrical devices when not in use helped the residents of McTyeire Residence Hall win the energy competition by consuming 43 percent less energy compared to March ‘07. A $1,000 prize was awarded by Emory’s Office of Sustainability Initiatives to the residents of McTyeire Hall to use on a sustainable-related prize. There were other buildings on campus with considerable energy reduction including: •Administration building – 30% reduction •Miller-Ward Alumni House – 22% reduction •Schwartz Center for Performing Arts – 13% reduction
