Summer Break Doesn't Mean Idle Hands for Kids

Source: Community Partnership Update/June 2008

School is out for summer and kids have free time on their hands. There’s no better way to keep their hands busy than with craft-making activities at summer camp.

The Michael C. Carlos Museum celebrates 16 years of providing exceptional summer programs for children and teenagers to explore the human impulse to create works of art. Camp Carlos offers its participants imaginative and innovative opportunities to explore ways in which people throughout time and across cultures have taken elements from the earth and created works of art. A summer of imagination and creativity await your child at Camp Carlos, held from June 2 until August 1 (except June 30 through July 4). Sessions are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Campers bring their own lunch and picnic together at noon on the Emory Quadrangle, weather permitting. For fee and registration information, visit www.carlos.emory.edu.

Camp Carlos Events in June:
Earthmovers and Shakers
June 2 to 6 for 7- to 9-year-olds.
June 9 to 13 for 10- to 12-year-olds.
In this session, campers will use a variety of hand-building techniques to form works of clay based on African traditions, from ancient to modern.

Pyramid Building
June 16 to 20 for 13- to 17-year-olds.
Using the pyramids of ancient Egypt and the ancient Americas as inspiration, campers will make pyramid-shaped books. The finished books will include text and imagery drawn from pyramid references but shaped to reflect personal content.

One for the Books: Ancient American Codices
June 23 to 27 for 13- to 17-year-olds.
In this session, campers will make an artist’s book/codex based on their own lives, with thoughts of how the codex form relates to the content. The codices will be made of anything from Plexiglas to recycled materials and will be scribed, painted, folded and stitched to create a unique work of book art.
