Feet walkingThere are many benefits to walking and everyone can take advantage of them. They include improved fitness, cleaner air and a greater sense of community. But to take full advantage of walking, it needs to be safe and easy.

To get started, all you need is a safe sidewalk or pathway and a good pair of walking shoes. If you encounter difficulties like broken, blocked or cracked sidewalks, call the Roads and Drainage Division of DeKalb County's Public Works department at 404-297-3840. Civic associations and community groups also advocate for sidewalk improvements. These groups can help incorporate many of the improvements you want to see in your neighborhood.

What can you do to make walking a more pleasurable experience in your neighborhood?
• Cross at crosswalks or where you can see and be seen.
• If there aren’t any sidewalks, walk on pathways or shoulders facing traffic.
• If walking for exercise, invite a friend along -- four feet are quicker, and safer than two.

Walking is one physical activity that brings lasting results. Doctors say that people who walk regularly can often attain better long-term health and suffer fewer injuries than someone who exercises more vigorously because walking has minimal impact on bones and joints. Additional long-term benefits include:
• Lower blood pressure
• Lower cholesterol
• Strengthened heart and cardiovascular system
• Increased bone density
• Increased flexibility
• Weight loss or weight maintenance
