Sometimes it’s not easy being green; however, Emory University is making it fun! This year Emory will expand its usual Earth Day events into a week-long celebration around campus, ending with the dedication of the newly created Burbanck Park on Clifton Road.

Earth Week organizers are reaching out to campus and community groups to ensure that Emory’s first-ever Earth Week goes off without a hitch. Emory’s Office of Sustainability Initiatives has been working closely with the Environmental Health and Safety Office, Rollins School of Public Health, the Bicycle Users Group and the Emory Environmental Alliance to increase awareness of the University’s sustainability efforts and to educate students and community members regarding how to support sustainability.

Earth Week Events
Purchase organic and locally grown commodities and see how local farmers shorten the food chain at the “Sustainable Food Fair and Farmers Market” on Friday, April 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in front of Dobbs University Center (DUC).

As you walk among the many booths and activities, expand your appreciation of the value of locally grown food. Sustainable foods, for instance, generally use fewer chemicals. Their growers also devote significant attention to water and soil quality.

At the “It’s Easy Being Green Fair” held on McDonough Field from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. also on April 13, you will have an opportunity to use a solar-powered barbeque grill and “blender bike” powered by human exercise. As you hang out, stop by the green-dorm room display featuring Energy Star electronics, appliances and energy-efficient lighting and attend the bike-repair workshop.

Gear up and join the “Effective Cycling Workshop” on Saturday, April 14, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at 1784 North Decatur Road, in the police training room. At the workshop, cyclists will learn safe methods of riding on the road and in traffic. The workshop also covers the fundamental principles of riding your bike effectively, predictably and confidently. Workshop participants are required to pay a $20 fee and class size is limited. For further information please call 404.727.1829.

The final commemorative Earth Week event is the dedication of the Drs. Madeline and William Burbanck Park on Sunday, April 22 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 1164 Clifton Road. Neighbors and community members are invited to join Emory, the Clifton Community Partnership, Druid Hills Civic Association, Peavine Watershed Alliance, Alliance to Improve Emory Village and Park Pride for this celebration. Parking at the new park will be limited, so walk or take Cliff shuttles to the event. Shuttles run from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. between the park and the B. Jones parking lot just inside Emory’s campus off of Dowman Drive. For more information about the park dedication please visit www.cliftoncommunitypartnership.org.

Emory is working in conjunction with the City of Atlanta for “Arms Around Atlanta” to clean up parks along the BeltLine. For more information on this event, visit www.atlantaga.gov/mayor/greener_atlanta_102306.aspx.
