Seniors 'Stretch' as Graduation Requirement

"Pomp and Circumstance" is the common theme played for many recent graduates. For graduating seniors at Decatur High School, one final requirement had to be completed before senior celebrations could commence.
Last month, seniors were gearing up for the final event of their Senior Project, the Senior Boards Night. On this night, seniors gathered in front of 70 community judges for board presentations where they made eight-minute oral presentations about their annual projects as a graduation requirement.
Each project included a research phase, selecting a project, executing a project and the required "stretch" of the project, which means each student had to venture into an area or activity that was new that could be used after graduation. The individual interest of the students in a specific subject or theme determined the focus of research and directed the project plans. Seniors were not working towards a numeric grade or ranking, but the illustration of a personal "stretch" and development.
Decatur High School seniors celebrated their graduation on May 29.
