How many steps do you need to hike each day for a healthy level of exercise? The answer: 10,000 (or about five miles of walking per day).

That is a lot of mileage, but you can get there, step by step. Here are some examples:
•Getting ready for work in the morning equals 245 steps.
•Walking around the average city block equals 594 steps.
•Taking a short grocery trip equals 790 steps.
•Walking in to get fast food equals 74 steps; using a drive-through earns you 0 steps and all that guilt.
•Walking to the mailbox to get your Community Update equals 75 steps.

Walking is a low-impact and injury-free form of exercise (requiring almost no equipment) and it yields significant health benefits, such as reduced obesity and blood pressure and a lower risk of stroke, heart disease and diabetes.

Spring is here, so get out and take a walk!
