New Park Opens in Druid Hills

Burbanck Park tree plantingThe first new park in Druid Hills in 50 years opened in October. The rainy Halloween weather played a soggy trick on promoters of the Burbanck Park, but the real trick was a disappearing house and foundation that were removed from the property. The genuine treat is an open green woodland with Peavine Creek at its center. No trace of the former ranch house or concrete slab disturbs the view.

Dozens of neighbors braved the rain to celebrate this first park added to the leafy suburb laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted. Crowded together under a small canopy, volunteers praised each other for three years of work removing the effects of 150 years of human occupation.

Today, Burbanck Park sits along Peavine Creek at the intersection of Oxford and Clifton roads. Nearby Emory Village and Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church sent supporters to help build the park that now includes a trail at creek side leading to Emory Village.

The Burbanck Park project is a prime example of effective community partnership: Emory University purchased the land from longtime Emory College professors Madeleine and William Burbanck, who worked to clean the polluted creek by their front door.

Burbanck Park Grand Opening
Among the guests and gardeners at the Phase I celebration, were DeKalb County Commissioner, Jeff Rader; Druid Hills Civic Association President, Dick Shuey; Alliance to Improve Emory Village President, Lois Berthaume; Emory General Counsel, Robert Rodriguez; and Emory's Director of Sustainability Initiatives, Ciannat Howett.

Instead of a traditional ribbon cutting, everyone got their hands dirty planting shrubs and trees. Support from Park Pride and Trees Atlanta helped create the vision and purchase the plants, completing the vision of Burbanck Park as a piece of Piedmont woodland, open to all.
