DeKalb History Makers Honored
May 30, 2008
Source: Community Partnership Update/April 2008
Although Emory was founded in Newton County in 1836, the University has spent more of its life in DeKalb County where it has made history over decades. Some of those DeKalb County “firsts” include Georgia’s first corneal transplant in 1974; the first kidney transplant in 1966; the first coronary bypass surgery in 1970; and the list continues to grow.
On March 27, the University received an award from the DeKalb History Center for its historical contributions and accomplishments in DeKalb County. Additional award recipients included Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., educator Narvie J. Harris, Manuel Maloof and Scott Candler, Sr.
To honor their accomplishments, commemorative bricks were laid in honor outside of the Old Courthouse on the Square in downtown Decatur.
