Got Spirit? The ING Marathon Wants You!

Calling all aspiring cheerleaders, Georgia’s ING marathon and half marathon needs your energy and lungs! Not for the race, but to cheer participants along the race course which runs through the Clifton community.

The second-annual race, sponsored by Emory Healthcare, takes place on March 30 and begins at Centennial Olympic Park. From there, runners will see Atlanta’s varied neighborhoods up close and personal as they trek through downtown, Candler Park, Druid Hills, Decatur, Oakhurst, Poncey-Highland and other areas of the city.

Not interested in running? The ING Neighborhood Challenge encourages spectator participation to cheer race participants at designated cheering zones along the course. All neighborhood, civic, business and other associations, groups and individuals are invited to cheer at their designated cheering zone. The Druid Hills Civic Association is planning a cheering zone right here in DeKalb County.

The top three cheering zones will be awarded grants of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 from ING to support neighborhood fitness initiatives. The goal of the cheering zones is to showcase neighborhoods and encourage all participants to reach the finish line.

Neighborhoods interested in participating in a cheering zone must complete a sign-up form and fax it to Georgia Marathon LLC at 770-939-4484 no later than March 9. Neighborhood representatives will be asked how the award grant would be spent, if awarded. Keep in mind that other community members from your neighborhood may also sign up to participate in the given cheering zone.
