Pedestrian friendly streetscapes mean more than just wider sidewalks. An attractive well-designed urban street is the result of a comprehensive design approach that balances the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and automobiles for safety, security and aesthetics.
Key Points About This Project:
- In November 2006, the CCP and Emory started to engage the community through community workshops in order to draft the Urban Design Guidelines for key corridors in the Clifton community.
- Goody Clancy, a nationally-recognized urban design firm, worked with the CCP and local neighbors and shared their superb institutional knowledge, and led our community towards drafting the guidelines, which will be completed and published during the summer of 2008.
- The new Urban Design Guidelines focus on the elements required to create attractive, safe streetscapes and connections along our major corridors. Improving the means for pedestrians to navigate through the community will support local activity centers and reduce dependence on single occupancy vehicles.
- The CCP anticipates that pedestrian friendly streetscapes will support Emory Village, the Clifton Road mixed use project and other destination spots for pedestrians.
- Local examples of areas where pedestrian friendly streetscapes have been successfully implemented include downtown Decatur and the intersection of Virginia and North Highland avenues in Atlanta's Virginia-Highlands community.
